“People who hand off health to the next generation are the ones who change the world.” -Tom Hopkins

Did you know that this generation of kids is the first in history that will live 10 years less than their parents due to unhealthy eating habits? We can make a difference by helping kids form healthy habits.

10 HEALTHY EATING TIPS FOR KIDS

Following these ten tips will help kids stay fit and healthy

1. Food is Fun… Enjoy your food

Eating is a good thing.  It gives you fuel like putting gas in a car.  Cars, buses and trains cannot run without fuel. Food gives you the fuel and energy to go!  If you don’t eat your mind and body can’t go fast like it was intended to.

2. Breakfast is a very important meal

Our bodies always need energy, and after a night’s sleep, energy levels are low. So, when you are off to school, if you don’t eat your body will stay sleepy and tired.  Start the day with breakfast. Plenty of carbohydrates is just the ticket: try cereal with skimmed milk, oatmeal, fruit or yogurt, toast or bread, perhaps with lean meats.

3. Eat lots of different kinds of foods every day, not just candy and sweets.

You need over 40 different kinds of vitamins and minerals every day for good health. Since there is no single food that contains them all, it is important to balance your daily choices.  You do not need to miss out on the foods you enjoy. The best way to make sure you get the right balance is to eat a wide variety of foods each day.

4. Don’t forget your daily  vitamins

Vitamins are important if our body is to be healthy and strong. They are absolutely necessary for our growth.  Make sure to take a daily vitamin in the morning with your breakfast.

5. Eat fruits and vegetables with your meals and as tasty snacks!

Fruits and vegetables are among the most important foods for giving us enough vitamins, minerals and fiber. We should all try to eat 5 servings a day. For example, a glass of fruit juice at breakfast, perhaps an apple and banana as snacks and two vegetables at meal times then you have already reached your total.

6. Fat facts. Too much fat is not good for your health

Eating too many of those tasty, fatty foods (such as butter, spreads, fried meats and sausages, pies and pastries) might not always be so good for your body. Although we need some fats to get all the nutrients we need, it is better for our health if we don’t eat too much of these foods and get knocked off balance.

7. Snack Smart! Eat regularly and choose healthy snacks

Even if you eat regular meals during the day, there will still be times in between that you feel hungry, especially if you have been very active. Snacks can fill the gap, but should not be eaten in place of meals, only as an extra. There are lots of different snacks available. Your choice may be nuts, raisins, fresh or dried fruits, yogurt, or sticks of vegetables like carrots and celery. Whichever snack you enjoy, remember it is always good to include a variety of different types to keep things in balance.

8. Quench your thirst. Drink plenty of water.

Did you know that more than half of your weight is just water? So as well as giving your body all the food it needs each day to keep healthy, you need at least 5 glasses of liquids a day. Usually – but not always – your body will tell you this, by making you feel thirsty. Plain tap water, bottled water, fruit juices, Crystal Light, tea, and milk are all acceptable.

9. Care for those teeth! Brush your teeth at least twice a day

Brush your teeth at least twice a day. Eating foods high in sugar or starches too often during the day can play a part in tooth decay. So don’t nibble foods and sip drinks all day long! However, the best way to keep a nice smile is to brush your teeth twice a day with a fluoride toothpaste. Also, after brushing your teeth at bedtime, don’t eat any food, or drink anything but water!

10. Get moving! Be active every day

Just like a bike may become rusty if it is not used for some time, our muscles and bones need to be kept moving too.        Activity is needed to keep your heart healthy and your bones strong. It can also be good fun. Try to include some form of activity every day: it may be just playing outside, walking around the neighborhood and running up the stairs. Outdoor games like  kickball, football at break times are good for giving the body a workout. Swimming is a great sport for keeping you healthy.

Parents, make sure to limit TV, video game and computer time. These habits lead to a sedentary lifestyle which increases risks for obesity and cardiovascular disease.  Encourage physical activities that children really enjoy. They’ll stick with it longer if they love it. Focus on the positive instead of the negative. Everyone likes to be praised for a job well done. Celebrate successes and help children and teens develop a good self-image.

Help them set specific goals and limits, such as one hour of physical activity a day or two desserts per week. It’s true that when goals are too vague the chance for success decreases.  Rewarding children with candy and unhealthy snacks encourage bad habits. Find other ways to celebrate good behavior.

Let’s get busy and make a difference in the lives of our kids. You have an opportunity to help kids form healthy habits.  They could be your kids, grand kids, nieces or nephews or neighborhood kids.

Teaching tomorrow’s generation to live a healthy life is the key to helping change our world.

Visualize it, Believe it, and DO IT!

It’s said that everyone has a story.  Matt Peterson’s story of strength and motivation proves that we all have within us the power to change.

In a recent interview he described what it was like for him one hundred pounds ago.  He was sluggish, self conscious, embarrassed and ashamed at how he had let his body go for so long.  He found himself withdrawing from friends, rarely making it out of his loose fitting sweat pants and over-sized shirts. All joy and zest for life was gone.

Knowing that he needed to make serious changes in his eating habits and level of activity he would start each week with the best of intentions, only to slide back into old habits and patterns. His thinking each week was that he could always start again the following Monday.  But after seeing a bunch of Mondays come and go, he got sick and tired of watching life pass him by.

One day, at his lowest point, he discovered stretch marks on his body as a result of his excessive weight gain.  The striking realization sank in that these were indelible marks that would be with him for a lifetime.  How could he possibly have let things get so out of hand?

Shortly after that point he found the motivation he had been pursuing for so long.  While looking at a Muscle and Fitness Magazine he spotted a picture of a guy’s well sculpted, muscular back; and that was it! Looking at this picture every day and visualizing his own body in that condition was enough motivation to make the long awaited changes that he had been hoping for.

Soon his negativity shifted to a positive mindset.  What once seem insurmountable, he now believed he could attain.  Knowing that it would take time and a huge commitment, he started learning how to eat a healthier diet. He then made a decision to educate himself on how to lose body fat while building lean muscle mass.

As he embraced these life changing principles he began to produce some great, productive workouts.  The more he channeled his focus, the better his workouts in the gym became.  With consistency and an unwavering commitment he kept his eye on the prize. After four months of eating right and exercise he lost over 70 pounds of unwanted body fat.

This progress propelled him forward in his weight loss to over 100 pounds in less than one year. Shortly after he scheduled a photo shoot to see how his own sculpted back compared to his motivational photo.  Take a look for yourself at what passion and hard work will accomplish!

One thing is for sure.  No more sluggish, self conscious and withdrawn Matt! He is a new man with a new found passion for life!

There are some who have attained a 100 pound weight loss, but few have attained “fitness model” status.  Matt has continued his journey of health and wellness becoming a student of living a vibrant and healthy life.  He is certified as a NASM Trainer, and loves to motivate others toward their fitness goals.  Matt is convinced that no matter what our age or body type, we can visualize it, believe it and do it!

He is currently writing his first book which tells the story of his 100 pound weight loss and total body transformation.  Remember that name, Matt Peterson.  Great success awaits!

Obstacles or stepping stones? You decide…

My new book, FIT FOREVER The Next Step comes out June 1.  The following excerpt is one of the daily motivations included in the book.

“An obstacle is often a stepping stone if we look a bit closer.”

Obstacles are really a matter of perception.  At a distance we may see an obstacle as some frustrating blockade keeping us from success.  But as we look closer and focus our attention forward, that obstacle may be the very thing needed to move us toward victory.

History doesn’t lie.  It has shown us that many of the greatest people of all time encountered heartbreaking obstacles before they tasted victory. In the end they won because they refused to be defined by their defeats.

A perfect example is Jim Stovall, the person who wrote the forward for this book. Jim has taken the number one challenge in his life – blindness, and found a way to inspire others.

In the midst of his visual obstacles, Jim is founder and president of the Emmy award-winning Narrative Television Network. Although originally designed for those who have difficulty with their vision, over 60% of NTN’s nationwide audience is comprised of fully sighted people who simply enjoy the programming.  He has been a national champion Olympic weightlifter, and is a highly sought after writer and speaker.  Jim is the author of the best-selling book, The Ultimate Gift, which has subsequently been made into a major motion picture with big name stars like James Garner and Abigail Breslin. For his work in making television accessible to our nation’s 13 million blind and visually impaired people, the President’s Committee on Equal Opportunity selected Jim Stovall as the Entrepreneur of the Year in 1997.  He was also chosen as the International Humanitarian of the Year in 2000, joining Jimmy Carter, Nancy Reagan, and Mother Teresa who were also former recipients of this honor. Steve Forbes, president and CEO of Forbes magazine has referred to Jim Stovall as “one of the most extraordinary men of our era.”

I’m with Lou Holtz, the only college football coach to lead six different programs to bowl games and a member of the College Football Hall of Fame, who said, “show me someone who has done something worthwhile, and I’ll show you someone who has overcome adversity.”  I think Jim Stovall has certainly turned his obstacles into stepping-stones.  If Jim can be successful without his sight, the possibilities are endless for those of us with perfect vision.
