The Oprah Show Was Awesome!

We all have things in life that we have to overcome.  Some of us have challenges that have plagued us for years.  Mine landed me on stage at the Oprah Show.

Since the age of 4, I have had a sleep related eating disorder known as NS-RED, Nocturnal Sleep Related Eating Disorder.  That’s right, while the majority of you are sleeping and dreaming at night, I am eating in my sleep. And I’m totally unaware that I’m doing it. Two to three nights a week I consume as much as 1000 calories, eating all the stuff that I try so hard to stay away from during the day.

Talk about frustrating!  In the night I eat pizza, ice cream, cakes, and Twinkies; and afterward I don’t even remember how good it tastes.  Bummer!  Once I even ate half of a pie that my wife had baked for a women’s group the next day. Not good for marital bliss…

How funny is that?  I’m a health conscious fitness consultant who eats all kinds of sweets in his sleep? Welcome to my world!  Believe me; I can pack on mega pounds if I don’t make adjustments with what I eat and how much I exercise. On a positive note, at least I know how much cardio it’s going to take to burn off the Little Debbies that I ate last night.

This is what the experts from Mayo Clinic say about those of us with NS-RED:

“These people are not conscious during episodes of NS-RED. They are not aware that they are eating in their sleep. They have no memories of having done so when they wake. Episodes seem to occur in a state somewhere between wakefulness and sleep. Food consumed during NS-RED episodes tends to be high-fat, high-sugar comfort food that people deny themselves while awake.”

Oprah’s show focused on the topic of sleep eating, something many people have never even heard of. She invited me to be a guest on that show since I was one of the few men in America with the disorder. Lucky me, right?

The Oprah show gave me a chance to know more about the disorder and learn that there are others who share the same struggles that I do. On the show I, along with three ladies with NS-RED, met with some physicians who were experts on sleep disorders. They didn’t cure me of my sleep eating disorder, but helped me to learn how to better manage my situation. Oprah told us that with all of her weight issues that she is thankful that she doesn’t have a sleep eating disorder to deal with.

Just for the record, Oprah was awesome! The show was tastefully done and a great experience. My wife and I had an amazing getaway at Chicago’s Omni Hotel, complete with fine dining and limo service. All I had to do was tell my biggest secret ever in front of 100 million viewers!

The truth is we all have challenges and obstacles that could keep us from reaching our goals. Some things we can change, some things we can’t. But whatever our given situation, we need to stop making excuses and get started taking positive steps toward being fit forever.  If I can do it with all of my quirks, then so can you!

Visualize it, Believe it, and DO IT!

It’s said that everyone has a story.  Matt Peterson’s story of strength and motivation proves that we all have within us the power to change.

In a recent interview he described what it was like for him one hundred pounds ago.  He was sluggish, self conscious, embarrassed and ashamed at how he had let his body go for so long.  He found himself withdrawing from friends, rarely making it out of his loose fitting sweat pants and over-sized shirts. All joy and zest for life was gone.

Knowing that he needed to make serious changes in his eating habits and level of activity he would start each week with the best of intentions, only to slide back into old habits and patterns. His thinking each week was that he could always start again the following Monday.  But after seeing a bunch of Mondays come and go, he got sick and tired of watching life pass him by.

One day, at his lowest point, he discovered stretch marks on his body as a result of his excessive weight gain.  The striking realization sank in that these were indelible marks that would be with him for a lifetime.  How could he possibly have let things get so out of hand?

Shortly after that point he found the motivation he had been pursuing for so long.  While looking at a Muscle and Fitness Magazine he spotted a picture of a guy’s well sculpted, muscular back; and that was it! Looking at this picture every day and visualizing his own body in that condition was enough motivation to make the long awaited changes that he had been hoping for.

Soon his negativity shifted to a positive mindset.  What once seem insurmountable, he now believed he could attain.  Knowing that it would take time and a huge commitment, he started learning how to eat a healthier diet. He then made a decision to educate himself on how to lose body fat while building lean muscle mass.

As he embraced these life changing principles he began to produce some great, productive workouts.  The more he channeled his focus, the better his workouts in the gym became.  With consistency and an unwavering commitment he kept his eye on the prize. After four months of eating right and exercise he lost over 70 pounds of unwanted body fat.

This progress propelled him forward in his weight loss to over 100 pounds in less than one year. Shortly after he scheduled a photo shoot to see how his own sculpted back compared to his motivational photo.  Take a look for yourself at what passion and hard work will accomplish!

One thing is for sure.  No more sluggish, self conscious and withdrawn Matt! He is a new man with a new found passion for life!

There are some who have attained a 100 pound weight loss, but few have attained “fitness model” status.  Matt has continued his journey of health and wellness becoming a student of living a vibrant and healthy life.  He is certified as a NASM Trainer, and loves to motivate others toward their fitness goals.  Matt is convinced that no matter what our age or body type, we can visualize it, believe it and do it!

He is currently writing his first book which tells the story of his 100 pound weight loss and total body transformation.  Remember that name, Matt Peterson.  Great success awaits!

Strength Through Adversity

“One who gains strength by overcoming obstacles possesses the only strength which can overcome adversity.”
Albert Schweitzer

Some time ago a friend of mine, Jim Barnes, contracted a massive infection causing him to lie in the hospital for 143 days. This infection literally invaded his body and spinal cord leaving him a quadriplegic.

Showing tremendous strength, incredible courage, and huge faith, he never gave up. His comeback has been nothing short of miraculous! Over a period of two years with God’s help, he has re-learned everything from swallowing, to sitting up, to walking, and now works out several times a week.

In the last couple of years he has shown up almost every day to do physical therapy and training at Sky Fitness. He refers to his workouts as his “time at the office,” realizing that this lifestyle would become his full-time job if he wanted a complete recovery.

His hard work and persistence has paid off and he is almost as good as new. To look at Jim you would never know that he was once a quadriplegic. This is the stuff that miracles are made of; and man, does he have a miracle or what?!

Do you know someone like Jim who has proven that adversity CAN be overcome?
